It’s right around the corner and I can almost touch it!
I know that I shouldn’t be so stoked about school starting again, but I just can’t wait. The mad schedule, the crazy rush and the never-ending list of things to do is…within my grasp!
I am most excited about this semester because it represents a new direction for me. I had currently been set in my journalistic career towards Reporting, but decided to switch to Multimedia at the end of the spring semester.
Fate has intervened and I realized that none of the multimedia, photography or broadcasting classes would be offered to me while I stayed in Reporting. The downside of the journalism school at UNC is most classes are wait listed, so getting into any journalism classes is difficult. It’s very frustrating.
But this semester I have classes that will enlighten me about the world of media, and begin filling my inner being with the patience to learn all things media, i.e. web sites, video, computer…(i.e. Ahna will be running and inhaling red wine a lot to stay sane). I am thrilled!
This summer has certainly been quite the learning curve in many ways.
My job with the Carrboro police department has given me a chance to get to know the inner workings of our judicial system, and gain respect for the men and women enforcing it everyday. I have also dealt with journalists on the other side of the fence…fending off their phone calls and answering curious questions. It has been a blast!
And my job with the PD gave me the freedom to get to know more of my future world: the internet. I had just recently opened my Twitter account and began using my blog on a more personal level this spring.
The last few months I have been able to engage in the online world. I learned more about blogging and Twitter, and how to use both to my advantage (still learning, folks).
The unfortunate side is that I have now seen the under belly of journalism, and understand more of what I will face in the future. It is intimidating, and it is difficult to embrace in my fast paced brain. The amount of blogs available, and the sheer number of excellent writers and journalists are overwhelming.
It is going to be a challenge, but I know that I made a good choice in switching my focus at school. I am ready to do battle. After I learn more, of course 🙂
The ever-expanding world of media and journalism isn’t going to back track, it is only going to continue growing larger and larger. I look forward to understanding it better, and becoming more knowledgable about our world.
Besides…..this stuff is fun!
